Salvation is a profound and life-changing experience that offers not just eternal security but a renewed relationship with God. If you find yourself wondering about salvation, or if you feel a tug in your heart towards understanding more about what it means to be saved, here’s a straightforward guide to help you on your journey.
Can God save me?
Why do I need to be saved?
Understanding our need for salvation begins with recognizing our guilt. The law, as revealed through the Ten Commandments, acts like a mirror showing us our true moral state. For instance:
- Have you ever told a lie? Even small lies count.
- Have you ever taken something that wasn’t yours? This could be anything, no matter how small.
- Have you ever looked at another person with lust? According to Jesus, this is akin to committing adultery in your heart.
These are a few of God’s laws and we have all failed to keep it. The Bible says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). This includes every person who has ever lived, except for Jesus Christ.
Consider this: If you were fined $25,000 for speeding, and you didn’t even realize you were speeding, you’d be surprised and likely upset. However, the law has no regard for ignorance. Similarly, God’s moral law reveals that we’ve all broken His commandments—whether through lying, stealing, or harboring wrongful desires—which justly deserves spiritual “fines” or consequences.
Just as speeding endangers lives, sin endangers our souls, separating us from God. This separation is why we need to be saved—to be reconciled with God and avoid the ultimate consequence of sin, which is eternal separation from Him, often described as death or hell.
How Can I Be Saved?
Salvation isn’t about earning God’s favor by doing good deeds; it’s about accepting His gift of grace. In the simplest terms, you are offered a rescue—a way to avoid the penalty for your offenses against God’s law. Jesus has done everything needed. He paid your fine, confirmed the payment was made by truly dying, and showed He has conquered death itself by coming back to life. This offers not only forgiveness but a new life with Him forever. All that’s left is for you to accept this gift, trusting in what He has done for you. Here’s how you can be saved:
- Acknowledge Your Sin: Just as a patient must acknowledge their illness to seek treatment, we must admit our spiritual sickness.
- Understand what Jesus did: Jesus Christ our Messiah, came to earth, lived a sinless life, and died on the cross to pay the penalty for your sins. He then rose from the dead, demonstrating His victory over sin and death. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
- Repent and Believe: Turn to the Lord Jesus Christ and put your faith in Him. This is not just a mental acknowledgment but a life commitment to forsake your old ways and live by faith in Christ.
If you have truly put your faith in Jesus, God has saved you from the wrath to come and you can live in hope –
…if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Rom 10:9
